PARENT SUMMIT ONLINE

SESSION THREE: THE ROLE OF WORDS

QUESTIONS FOR DISCUSSION:

  1. Do you agree that parent-to-child words carry more weight than words generally carry?  Why or why not?
  2. How do the words you use, along with the way you use them, determine the extent of your influence in your child’s life?
  3. Why do negative words tend to weigh more than positive ones?  Why do you suppose the impact of negative words often lingers longer than that of positive words?
  4. Have you experienced your words landing heavier with your child than you intended?  How does the source of words affect the weight they carry?
  5. What was your immediate thought when you heard “intent is irrelevant”?  Do you agree that if your words hurt or damaged your child, what you intended doesn’t matter?
  6. On average, how often do you apologize to your children for something you said?  Can you describe a recent situation when this happened?
