PARENT SUMMIT ONLINE
SESSION THREE: THE ROLE OF WORDS
QUESTIONS FOR DISCUSSION:
- Do you agree that parent-to-child words carry more weight than words generally carry? Why or why not?
- How do the words you use, along with the way you use them, determine the extent of your influence in your child’s life?
- Why do negative words tend to weigh more than positive ones? Why do you suppose the impact of negative words often lingers longer than that of positive words?
- Have you experienced your words landing heavier with your child than you intended? How does the source of words affect the weight they carry?
- What was your immediate thought when you heard “intent is irrelevant”? Do you agree that if your words hurt or damaged your child, what you intended doesn’t matter?
- On average, how often do you apologize to your children for something you said? Can you describe a recent situation when this happened?
